James Garnett
Clay provides me the media with the most flexibility to construct objects. The simplest of forms can become the most interesting by making their size unexpected, their glazing, or adding functionality to the piece. Though constructing the form is my favorite step of the process, the final step - raku firing - enhances the forms I build by adding what I feel is an old world surface, it provides the visual interest of color, and it gives me the chance to see the final piece relatively quickly once the glaze firing process begins.
My work emerges from everything I see… buildings, furniture, billboards, tools, nature, etc. It has been called contemporary Asian probably because of the firing technique, but aesthetically I believe it is also quiet and unassuming.
